š Tahoe Dog Co.'s Guide To Enjoying The Truckee River Trail With Your Dog
Share
If you're looking for one of the best places to walk your dog in Lake Tahoe, theĀ Truckee River Trail in Tahoe City should be high on your list.
Following the Truckee River from Tahoe City toward Olympic Valley, this beautiful paved trail is one of our favorite places to enjoy Tahoe with a dog. You can walk for 15 minutes or spend a few hours exploring along the river. There are places to stop, opportunities for water-loving dogs to enjoy the Truckee River, and something different to experience in every season.
At Tahoe Dog Co., we think this is one of those quintessential Tahoe dog adventures: simple, beautiful and easy to enjoy again and again.
Start at 64 Acres in Tahoe City
Our favorite place to begin is 64 Acres in Tahoe City.
There's parking right by the Truckee River, and you'll be able to hop onto the trail from there. No complicated trailhead directions required.
From 64 Acres, simply start walking along the river.
One of the best things about the Truckee River Trail is that you don't need a destination. If you and your dog only want a quick walk, turn around after 10 or 15 minutes. If it's a beautiful day and everyone is having fun, just keep going.
Before or after your walk, Dam Cafe is nearby and is a great dog-friendly spot to grab something to eat or drink. It's one of our favorite ways to turn a simple river walk into a relaxed Tahoe morning or afternoon.
Enjoy the Truckee River
Of course, the star of this particular walk is the Truckee River.
The trail follows the river for miles, giving you beautiful views along the way and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the water.
For dogs who love to swim, there are places to access the river along the trail. Always pay attention to current water conditions and your dog's swimming ability before allowing them into the water.
We have a friend whose dog has even been known to swim from 64 Acres toward River Ranch while the humans float alongside.
That's a pretty serious Tahoe Dog.
Your dog certainly doesn't need to attempt anything quite so ambitious. Find a safe place to stop, let your water-loving pup enjoy the river, or simply sit beside the water together for a while.
And if your dog does go swimming, don't be surprised if the walk back to the car involves one very happy, very wet dog.
The Truckee River Trail Through the Seasons
One of the reasons we love recommending the Truckee River Trail is that this isn't just a summer activity. With a little planning, it's a beautiful year-round dog-friendly walk in Tahoe City.
š¼ Spring Along the Truckee River
As Tahoe begins to emerge from winter, you'll start seeing wildflowers and greenery return along the trail.
It's a beautiful time to walk the Truckee River with your dog, but remember that Tahoe spring conditions can be unpredictable. Snow and ice may linger, and melting snow can mean wet or muddy areas.
Check conditions, wear appropriate footwear and expect that your dog may come home with dirty paws.
āļø Summer on the River
Summer is when the Truckee River Trail really comes alive.
You'll share the trail with walkers, runners, cyclists and other dogs, while people float down the Truckee River beside you.
It's one of those wonderfully Tahoe summer scenes ā dogs, bikes, rafts, sunshine and the river all sharing the same corridor.
With all that activity, be particularly considerate of the people around you. Keep your dog under control, give cyclists room to pass and make sure your dog doesn't interfere with people enjoying the river.
And, of course, follow all current posted leash requirements.
š Fall on the Truckee River Trail
Fall might just be our favorite time to walk here.
As the leaves begin to change, the Truckee River corridor fills with beautiful fall color. The temperatures cool down, summer crowds begin to disappear and the whole trail can feel a little quieter.
In fact, we love the Truckee River in fall so much that it inspired one of our Tahoe Dog Co. designs.
Our Tahoe Dog Molly sticker features a dog enjoying the Truckee River surrounded by beautiful autumn color.
It's our little celebration of one of our favorite dog-friendly places in Tahoe during one of its most beautiful seasons.
āļø Winter Along the Truckee River
Don't write off the Truckee River Trail when the snow arrives.
The trail is often plowed during winter, which can make it a wonderful option for getting outside with your dog when many of Tahoe's hiking trails are buried.
Conditions can still be snowy or icy, so check before heading out and dress accordingly.
On the right day, though, walking alongside a snow-covered Truckee River with your dog is about as peaceful as Tahoe gets.
Share the Trail
The Truckee River Trail is popular with locals and visitors alike, and you'll rarely have it entirely to yourself.
Depending on the season, you'll encounter walkers, runners, cyclists, families, other dogs and people floating or playing in the Truckee River.
Be aware of bikes coming from both directions and keep your dog from blocking the trail. Give other dogs plenty of space and don't assume that every dog ā or person ā wants to say hello.
Always follow current posted leash laws and regulations. Even if your dog has excellent recall, posted rules are there to help everyone safely enjoy this shared space.
And always pick up after your dog.
Leave the Truckee River Better Than You Found It
Part of being a Tahoe Dog is taking care of Tahoe.
Pack out everything you bring with you. Pick up after your dog. Respect the river, wildlife and surrounding environment. Follow posted rules and stay out of environmentally sensitive areas.
And if you see a wrapper, bottle or piece of trash someone else left behind, consider picking that up, too.
Leave it better than you found it.
These places are special because people before us took care of them. It's our responsibility to do the same for the dogs and people who come next.
A Few Tahoe Dog Co. Favorites for the Trail
You don't need much to enjoy the Truckee River Trail, but there are a few Tahoe Dog Co. favorites that fit particularly well with this adventure.
Our Everyday leash is perfect for keeping your dog close when bikes, runners and other dogs pass on the trail.
Even with the Truckee River beside you, fresh drinking water is always a good idea. Our Summit Water Bowl collapses down easily for walks and other Tahoe adventures.
And don't forget about the human end of the leash. Tahoe sunshine is strong, so our Classic Trucker HatĀ is an easy choice for a day along the river.
Keep these secondary to the adventure, though. The best thing you can bring to the Truckee River Trail is enough time to actually enjoy it.
Make It Your Own Tahoe Adventure
There isn't one right way to experience the Truckee River Trail.
Come down for a quick 15-minute walk before breakfast. Spend a summer afternoon walking beside the river and watching the rafters float past. Find a spot where your dog can safely enjoy the water. Walk beneath the changing leaves in October. Or bundle up and come back for a snowy winter walk.
You can walk for as long as you want and simply turn around when you're ready.
That's part of what makes this one of our favorite dog-friendly things to do in Tahoe City. It doesn't require a major plan or a full day. It's simply a beautiful place to get outside and enjoy Tahoe with your dog.
