🏖️ Tahoe Dog Co.'s Guide to Kiva Beach in Lake Tahoe
Share
If you're looking for the best dog-friendly places in Lake Tahoe, Kiva Beach belongs at the top of your list.
Located on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe near the Tallac Historic Site, Kiva Beach is one of our favorite places to bring our dogs and arguably one of the most dog-friendly destinations in the entire Lake Tahoe Basin. With a long, wide sandy beach, beautiful Lake Tahoe water and spectacular Sierra views, Kiva is about as close as it gets to dog mecca in Tahoe.
At Tahoe Dog Co., we're all about celebrating the dogs who hike the trails, swim in the lake, play in the snow and make the most of mountain life. Kiva Beach captures that lifestyle perfectly.
Why Kiva Beach Is One of the Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in Lake Tahoe
Finding a beautiful Lake Tahoe beach where you can bring your dog isn't always easy. Many beaches around the lake have restrictions on dogs, which is one reason Kiva is such a special place for Tahoe dog owners and visitors traveling to Lake Tahoe with their dogs.
Kiva has a long, wide stretch of sand with plenty of room to walk along the shoreline and take in the views. Dogs can enjoy the sandy beach and Lake Tahoe itself alongside their people.
And then there are the views.
Kiva sits in one of the most beautiful parts of South Lake Tahoe, surrounded by the Sierra Nevada and some of the South Shore's most recognizable scenery. It's an especially beautiful place for a morning walk, an afternoon by the water or a relaxed evening at the lake with your dog.
But one of our favorite things about Kiva is simply the dogs. On a nice Tahoe day, you're likely to encounter plenty of four-legged locals and visitors enjoying the beach.
If you're planning a dog-friendly Lake Tahoe vacation, this is one stop we wouldn't miss.
How to Get to Kiva Beach
Kiva Beach is located off Highway 89 on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, a few miles outside the City of South Lake Tahoe.
From Highway 89, turn onto Heritage Way, then take a fairly quick left onto Tallac Road and follow the road (slowly) toward the Kiva Beach parking area.
From the parking area, it's a short walk (west) down to the sandy beach.
Like many of the best places to visit in Lake Tahoe during summer, parking can become busier on beautiful days. Arriving earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon can make your visit a little easier. Note that you may have to park on the highway, and walk down, if that busy. Though we would say not to go at that busy of a time...
What to Bring for Your Dog
A little preparation goes a long way when you're spending a day outside with your dog in Lake Tahoe.
Here are a few of our Kiva Beach essentials:
A Good Leash
Bring a sturdy leash and be prepared to follow all posted leash regulations. Our Everyday Dog Leash is made for exactly these kinds of Tahoe adventures — from walks along the beach to trails, breweries and everything else your Tahoe Dog has planned for the day.
Plenty of Water + a Collapsible Bowl
Even when your dog is spending the day next to Lake Tahoe, bring fresh drinking water.
Tahoe's sunshine, dry mountain air and elevation can make both dogs and humans thirsty surprisingly quickly. We like carrying our Summit Water Bowl, a collapsible bowl that's easy to throw into a backpack, beach bag or car.
A Tahoe Dog Bandana
Is a bandana strictly necessary for a trip to Kiva? Maybe not.
Does every dog look better walking down a Lake Tahoe beach in one? Absolutely.
Our Good Dog Bandana was designed for days exactly like this — at the lake, on the trail and anywhere else your Tahoe adventures take you.
Paw Wax for After the Adventure
Sand, trails, rocks and a long day of exploring can be a lot for paws, especially for dogs who are determined to make the absolute most of their Tahoe vacation.
Our Adventure Paw Wax (especially in the 1 oz size) is an easy addition to your Tahoe dog kit for a little post-adventure paw care.

Important Rules for Visiting Kiva Beach With Your Dog
Kiva Beach is an incredibly special place, and keeping it dog-friendly requires all of us to take care of it.
Always follow the current posted rules and leash requirements when you visit. Regulations and conditions can change, so signs at Kiva should be your guide.
Please:
- Clean up after your dog and properly dispose of waste.
- Pack out everything you bring in and leave no trace.
- Keep your dog under control and be respectful of other dogs and people using the beach.
- Keep dogs out of the Taylor Creek Marsh and the water within the marsh area.
- Respect wildlife and environmentally sensitive areas.
- Follow all posted regulations and leash requirements.
Keep Dogs Out of the Marsh
This one is especially important.
Dogs can enjoy Lake Tahoe itself, but they should not enter the nearby Taylor Creek Marsh or marsh water. The marsh is a sensitive habitat and an important part of the surrounding ecosystem.
Please give the marsh plenty of space and help protect the area so Kiva can remain a beautiful place for dogs, wildlife and people.
Be a Good Tahoe Dog
At Tahoe Dog Co., we say that a Tahoe Dog isn't a breed. It's a lifestyle.
And part of that lifestyle is taking care of the incredible place we get to enjoy.
At Kiva, that means giving other dogs and beachgoers space, cleaning up after your dog, respecting wildlife, following posted rules and leaving the beach just as beautiful as you found it.
A Tahoe Dog loves the lake — and takes care of it, too.
Is Kiva Beach Worth Visiting With Your Dog?
Absolutely.
If someone asked us to recommend just one dog-friendly place to visit during a Lake Tahoe vacation, Kiva Beach would be very hard to beat.
Walk the sand. Let your dog enjoy Lake Tahoe. Take in the mountain views. Meet a few other Tahoe Dogs. And give yourself enough time to enjoy being in one of the most beautiful dog-friendly places in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
For us, Kiva represents so much of what we love about living in Tahoe with dogs: getting outside, enjoying the lake, meeting other dog people and being part of a community that appreciates this incredible place.
That's what being a Tahoe Dog is all about.
Tahoe Dog Co. Local Tip
Don't overcomplicate your trip to Kiva. Bring water, a collapsible bowl, leash, waste bags, and a towel, and plan on staying longer than you think.
Dogs have a way of making that decision for you.
